A medical expert, Mrs Abigael Shona, suggested breastfeeding an infant and not man can prevent breast cancer in women.
Shona told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ilorin that contrary to popular belief that male breast sucking their wives can not prevent breast cancer, can only help detect it.
She said mothers who breastfeed are of lower risk of breast cancer pre- and post-menopause.
"Most women who breastfeed experience hormonal changes during lactation
that delay their menstruation.
"This will reduce a woman's lifetime exposure to hormones such as estrogen, which can promote the growth of breast cancer cells.
"And what is sucking the breast by a man only can do is to detect breast cancer early enough to feel bumps so as to seek medical help," said Shona.
She, however, said it was encouraging that women allow their partner to massage and caress their breasts to detect cancer early.
"We encourage women to not deprive their husbands of breast sucking and fondling pleasure because it will also be beneficial for them.
"This is because in as much as we preach self-examination by women for early detection, most women do not do it.
"So, if they allow their husbands to help them with it, it will help a lot because early detection is the ultimate panacea to overcome the scourge.
"If breast cancer is detected early before it reaches an advanced stage, could survive," said Shona.
Medical experts, however, noted that men can also suffer from breast cancer, advising them also were on the look out.
